How strong is the stock market ?

The bad news just keeps coming but the stock market seems to be resilient.
The daily news brings with it a continuous flow of bad news. Job cuts, banks reporting increasing losses and the government subsidising a number of industries. There seems no end in sight.
It is easy at these times to give up on global equity markets assuming they will simply fall further.
However since the beginning of the year the markets in general have been quite resistant to bad news and further falls. Some analysts believe the market low in this cycle was achieved on 10th October 2008.
If this holds to be true the downside for markets could be limited
